It was a strange experience visiting the Barracks. I particularly found it bizarre that we didn’t need ID to get through the first check-point, but only to sign in one we were already in the grounds. You can visit the Barracks if you have a defence force host or a recognised partner/spouse of a defence force member to host you.You have to have an ID visitors badge on you at all times. There aren’t any facilities, cafes or restaurants available for visitors. It’s essentially a gated-off community, it feels like an alternate universe, like the film The Truman Show.I did not take photos as I was unsure if I could.

The is a Australian Defence Force establishment and you need to have a legitimate reason to visit on official defence business. The is no public access except for open days.

Larrakeyah Defence Precinct is one of the best establishments in the the Department of Defence.Bordering the sea, this precinct offers residents and employees some of the finest views of any base in Australia—on par with HMAS Watson. This barracks is home to the highly regarded NORFORCE and often has helicopters flying overhead, and patrol boats moving docking. All this, and it's walking distance from the Darwin CBD.It is the place to be.
